He stayed in San Francisco and joined the Gay Liberation Movement. He was able to avoid detection for the remainder of his military service and was honorably discharged in February 1972. Image Credit: Photo courtesy of Patricia Baker Image Description: Gilbert Baker looks at the camera wearing glasses and a military uniform. The power of love opened my closet door.” Gilbert Baker came out to his family, and they disowned him. I was not going to lie about being gay anymore. I cried, but I wasn't going to go back into the closet and get married like him. A while later, I heard from a friend that Jim had gotten married and gone back to Tennessee. After completing their nursing programs they were sent to different hospitals: Jim went to Okinawa and Baker was stationed in San Francisco. The pair soon fell in love but Jim was afraid of being caught. The pair become fast friends: “walking across the Golden Gate Bridge or hiking to the top of the Marin Headlands just to take in its breathtaking sights” Together they explored the forest and beaches of the Presidio and different neighborhoods in the city. Jim, lived in the same barracks and also worked as a medic in the same facility as Baker. ![]() In his off time, he was with another soldier, a friend. He spent his week days working as a medic in Oakland: collecting urine and blood samples for testing from soldiers returning from Vietnam. ![]() Gilbert Baker moved into the military barracks at the Presidio in 1970. My cubicle had a window with an unobstructed view of the Golden Gate Bridge.” “I was assigned to barracks built on the sandy shores of the bay. He excelled in his courses and eventually became a nurse. Baker agreed and was sent to a medic training. The staff sergeant called Baker into his office and strongly suggested that he become a medic instead. One morning he refused to carry a weapon, and demanded discharge as a conscientious objector. After this experience, and more threats he was fed up. He shot at the melon until it exploded and explained that this is what happens to gay people in the army: “they die”. One day after failing to hit the target on the firing range, the drill sergeant removed Baker from the group and put a watermelon in front of his target. During basic training he was subject to more homophobic harassment from superior officers. Gilbert Baker’s experience only got worse however. Baker maintained his composer and the sergeant finally signed off on the bottom of his form. The sergeant responded, “Are you sure? You sound like one.” Baker continued to deny it, as the sergeant threatened him with dis-honorable discharge and homophobic slurs. He began the sexuality screening process by asking, “Are you a homosexual?” Baker responded by saying “no”- a lie he was used to telling. A sergeant heavily questioned Baker during his induction process. Baker saw a way out when he was drafted into the army on his 19th birthday in June 1970. ![]() ![]() Even with his love for art and music, Baker was not happy in Kansas. His parents relented a bit when Baker won a school art contest with a scholarship to an art academy. Being an artist was bad in the same way that homosexuality was bad. Baker wrote: “But this, after all, was Kansas in 1956. At an early age he found refuge in art but his parents discouraged him from pursuing this hobby. Gilbert Baker was born on June 2nd, 1951 in Kansas. One of their representatives communicated to the Regional Labor Board (RLB), “An emergency exists in this city, whereby the life and safety of the public is menaced and endangered.”Ĭoal stocks ebbed away, and the city’s police were unable to defeat the strikers. The strike caught the ruling elite of Minneapolis by surprise. ![]() A second picket would flip the dump lever on the truck and the load of coal would be deposited in the street. Strikers’ trucks in hot pursuit would have one picket jump on the running board of the offending vehicle and reach inside the cab to pull the emergency brake. Where individual trucks, aided by police, managed to break through picket lines, strikers used a mobile technique dubbed “cruising pickets” to stop them. Now, within three hours, some 600 workers, comprising truck drivers, their helpers and the workers who labored inside the coal yards, had 65 of the companies shut down. Preparations for this moment had quietly begun three years earlier. The unorganized coal delivery workers, poverty-stricken and having borne the worst of the Great Depression, voted to strike. But on February 1, temperatures suddenly dropped below zero, and the following day the tight-knit group of workers leading the effort to secure improved working conditions, higher wages and union recognition called a meeting. Late in January, the upper-Midwestern city, noted for its fiercely cold winters, had been hit with unseasonably warm weather, and the need for coal had slackened. On the morning of February 7, 1934, workers who delivered coal to businesses and residences throughout Minneapolis, Minnesota, fanned out across the city, armed with mimeographed strike instructions and maps, to shut down the 67 companies that supplied the city’s source of heat. ![]() 1934: Police use tear gas against unemployed march on City Hall, Minneapolis Minnesota. And the health care sector has seen much of the strike activity, with unions and their members complaining about pay and staffing shortages impacting the quality of care.įrom the start of 2022 through August of this year, the Bureau of Labor Statistics has tracked 42 work stoppages of 1,000 or more strikers. The tentative agreement comes during heightened union activity in the United States. According to its website, Kaiser Permanente has 12.7 million members and operates 39 hospitals and 622 medical offices. Unlike a fee-for-service health care model, in which doctors and other providers are paid for each service performed, Kaiser Permanente patients or their employers pay a membership fee to access Kaiser Permanente’s wide range of health care services. Kaiser Permanente is one of the nation’s largest not-for-profit health providers. Nearly 4,000 members of the United Auto Workers union went on strike at Mack Trucks early Monday after membership there overwhelmingly rejected an 11th hour deal reached a week earlier. It is not uncommon in recent years for rank-and-file union members to reject tentative deals reached between union negotiators and management. If they vote “no,” another strike could still happen. Rank-and-file members of the union will get to vote on the tentative labor agreement with their employer. It also represents hospital support staff, including maintenance and janitorial staff as well as food services. The union coalition represents 40% of Kaiser Permanente’s non-physician workforce and includes a wide range of medical workers, including EMTs, X-ray technicians, nursing assistants and respiratory care practitioners. According to the coalition, Kaiser Permanente management agreed to raise wages by 21% over four years in all Kaiser locations and establish a new health care worker minimum wage: $25 per hour in California and $23 per hour in other states where Kaiser operates.Īt a news briefing with Su and representatives from Kaiser Permanente and the coalition of unions, Kaiser Permanente said it had agreed to accelerate hiring, furthering its commitment to address a critical staffing shortage that some employees said contributed to feelings of burnout.ĭuring the briefing, Dave Regan, the president of SEIU-UHW, the largest union in the coalition, said that the tentative agreement includes an annual bonus program for unionized workers tied to the success of two metrics: the number of patients who receive preventative vaccinations, like the flu vaccine, and the amount that total blood pressure is reduced among Kaiser Permanente patients. While a full picture of the tentative deal was not immediately available, some details were released Friday. But the coalition of unions was threatening an eight-day strike next month with even more workers walking out if a new deal was not reached by October 31. The strike last week lasted only three days, the length of time it had been scheduled to run. Labor Secretary Su,” it said in its tweet.
